Fire Escape
Avery took a deep breath as her hand wrapped around the metal door handle, wincing slightly as her fingers touched the metal giving her a small indication of how cold it would be tonight. She hated it, the cold, always had, which was one of the reasons she wanted to leave Michigan as soon as she was able, at least before all this happened. You see before their were Geeks, and before Avery had to look behind her back every five seconds she wanted to act, and therefore she wanted nothing more than to move to California and walk down Hollywood blvd. However that dream was never going to happen, something she had learned to cope with, she could use her acting ability for other things, like tricking 'poor' people on the streets when they saw them first and stealing their food, not all of it, just some of it. Avery still had her morals.
Opening the door Avery walked outside, ignoring the cold air as she drew her dagger, getting ready to strike at a moments notice and listened for any indication that a Geek was near. You see she was suppose to take over watching duty with Alex, and the two were suppose to leave together, to watch each others backs was they made their way to the roof. However he was no where to be found, it seemed that he had ran off again, something that was against the rules, however their group was low on raiders and they couldn't afford to kick him out, and he knew it too. Ass.
Looking around for about a minute Avery walked towards the Fire Escape ladder on the wall that she could easily see thanks to the moon that was outside that night. Thanks to their situation with the Geeks Avery finally got over her fear of heights, of course climbing the ladder was hard for the first few months but now it was like a walk in the park. Throwing the bag that was strapped to her shoulders on the roof Avery pulled herself up and stood up to see Alex sitting on the roof already.
Avery put her hands on her hips. 'Where were you?' She didn't understand why he kept leaving and coming back whenever he felt like it, it wasn't safe to do that, what if something happened to him? What if someone followed him? She thought that he would have gotten back to his old self with it being a year since...well since his fiancee died and came back before Avery killed her. And to be honest? She was getting tired of always having to stand up for him when Scarlet always brought up the fact that people wanted him gone.

Alex had gotten up before the sun had risen, if he waited any longer someone was bound to wake up and tell that he was going out. It didn't matter, he didn't care. They could kick him out of their group, he was better off on his own anyway. But they wouldn't. Scarlet wouldn't dare kick him out, he was the best Raider out of all of them and he wasn't afraid with close-combat with the Geeks.
He zipped up his black hoodie and shoved his hands into the pockets. The morning was cool and he knew that the night would be freezing. He was keeping watch tonight, fuck. Alex sighed, watching as his hot breath made fog in cold air. Keeping watch wasn't the worst part, it was the fact that he was keeping watch with none other than Avery. The attractive young man had hated the younger girl ever since she put that bullet in Alice's head.
Alex didn't know why he was out this long, in fact, he had strayed farther than he usually did. There were bound to be Geeks out here or other stragglers. He could feel both the glock and the knife on his hip as he walked but if it came to, he would use his knife. It was his preferred weapon. Before he knew it, he was standing before a rectangular patch of ground, there was no grass although a few flowers sprouted from the uprooted earth. It was Alice's grave.
After Avery had shot her, he had picked up her body and carried her far off from the camp where he buried her. This was the place where he said good-bye to his fiancée and unborn child. After he left, he was unsure about how long he had traveled or how far but by the time he had reached the roof of the Water Department for his shift, the moon had risen signaling night.
Alex had been gone all day.
He sat on the roof, leaning forward to watch the ground floor. He sat in silence and he could feel the chill of the night begin to settle in. A voice made him turn his head and he stated at Avery for awhile. "I've been here. Where the hell have you been?" He asked her, a scowl on his face.

Avery glared at Alex when he spoke to her asking where she had been. The two had never been on the best of terms especially when she shot Alice, his fiancee, in the head. Scarlet had voiced her opinion on various occasions about how everyone has lost someone they love, and that he needs to get over it, something Avery would always argue about how it was his Fiancee and that she was pregnant. She didn't even know why she tried to keep him here anymore, he should just leave if he's so unhappy. However, Avery did not say this as she sat down on the other side of the roof instead she said, 'I was looking for you, because the rules say we have to leave together to ensure one anothers safety. Apparently that's only important to one of us,' Avery said with a roll of her eyes and began to look towards the lake, watching the water and felt a sense of calm over take her.
'Where were you anyways?' Avery inquired glancing towards his direction before looking back at the water. 'You can't keep disappearing like that you know, people are talking,' Avery said unable to stop herself from talking. It was true though, people were talking and every time Alex left made everyone even more uncomfortable believing that he was going to another group to tell them everything so when the time was right they could attack. Avery laughed every time she heard that rumor, it was one of the stupidest things she had ever heard.

The brunette glared at him and he didn't show any emotion at the look. He was trained not to show emotion, Alex had always been a very good poker player. No one understood why he was the way he was. It seemed as if everyone had something to live for, whether that something be for themselves or for others. Alex had nothing. Nothing tied him to this Earth any more. "We were on watch duty together, it's not your responsibility to watch me. I'm a big boy, I can take care of myself just like I'm sure you can."
She asked him again where he was and Alex didn't answer her. He cast his glance far off into the trees and a pained expression washed over his features. However, as quick as it had come it left and Alex was watching the ground once more. "Out." He told her.
People were talking? How rich. They were in an apocalypse and these morons were still trying to gossip about the man who lost everything. "Let them talk. I could care less about anything any of them have to say about me." It was silent again and he let out another sigh, his breath fogging the air. "Why do you care what they're saying anyway? You don't like me."
